K-Beauty’s New Era: Reaching a Historic $11.4 Billion Export Peak in 2025
I am excited to share the latest 2025 provisional data released by the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety (MFDS) on January 9, 2026. The results are nothing short of historic: South Korean cosmetics exports have shattered previous records, reaching $11.4 billion, a 12.3% increase from the already impressive 2024 performance.
This growth was consistent throughout the year, with every single month in 2025 setting a new record for that specific month. Notably, September 2025 became the first month in history to exceed $1.1 billion in exports.
The United States Becomes the #1 Market
The most significant milestone of 2025 is the crowning of the United States as the top destination for K-Beauty.
- USA Takes the Lead: For the first time, the U.S. surpassed China to become South Korea's #1 export market, with $2.19 billion in exports (up 15.1% from 2024).
- China Moves to #2: Exports to China totaled $2.01 billion, representing a 19.2% decrease as the market continues to shift.
- Japan Remains Strong: Japan held the #3 spot with $1.09 billion, marking its second consecutive year exceeding the $1 billion mark

Global Diversification: Expanding to 202 Countries
K-Beauty is no longer reliant on a few specific regions. In 2025, South Korean cosmetics reached a total of 202 countries, up from 172 in the previous year.
| Region/Country | 2025 Performance | Key Highlights |

Trends: Skincare Dominance and Fragrance Growth
While skincare remains the backbone of the industry, niche categories are seeing the fastest growth.
- skincare (Foundational Strength): Remains the largest category with $8.54 billion in exports (74.7% market share).
- Cleansing Products: Inbody/cleansing products grew significantly by 27.3%.
- Fragrance (The Rising Star): While smaller in total volume, Fragrance products saw the highest growth rate at 46.2%.

Future-Proofing K-Beauty: Regulatory Support
The MFDS is actively working to ensure K-Beauty remains competitive as global regulations tighten.
- afety Evaluation Systems: To meet new standards in the U.S. and China, Korea will phase in a new "Safety Evaluation System" starting in 2028, with full implementation by 2031.
- Technological Support: The government is improving "AI CosBot," an AI-driven system to help companies navigate complex international regulations.
- Global Networking: Efforts include providing Halal certification consulting and expanding international networks through the "Global Cosmetics Regulatory Heads Meeting"
